Taco Night, 8 Tacos, and Zero Regrets...
Last night was taco night. My family wanted tacos, and I wanted to enjoy it with them. So I did — really enjoy it. I ate eight tacos.
They weren’t junky tacos either: corn tortillas fried in avocado oil, a little ground beef, black beans, lettuce, tomato, onion, salsa, and Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Still, tacos are sneaky — they’re small in the hand but big in the calorie count. By the time I was full, I’d eaten close to a full day’s worth of food in one sitting.
And you know what? I’m okay with it.
Why I Don’t Regret It
Food isn’t just fuel. It’s also joy, family, and connection. Sitting at the table and laughing with my family while we stacked tacos was worth every bite.
One heavy meal doesn’t erase a week of good choices. What matters is the bigger pattern. My breakfast that day was simple — eggs, chickpeas, and potato. I skipped lunch. So yes, dinner ended up being “a lot,” but it was also balanced food: protein, fiber, veggies, and healthy fat.
The Lesson in Balance
I realized the only thing that threw me off wasn’t the tacos themselves, but skipping lunch. When I sat down at dinner, I was hungry enough to keep going until I’d had eight. Next time, a light lunch or an afternoon snack could buffer that urge.
It’s not about avoiding taco night. It’s about building around it.
The Takeaway
Health isn’t about never overdoing it. It’s about recognizing patterns, making adjustments, and enjoying the moments that matter. I could beat myself up for eight tacos, or I could smile knowing I had a great night with my family — and today I can lean back into lighter, steadier meals.
Because in the end, the goal isn’t perfection. The goal is balance, joy, and sustainability.
